Graham’s 1974 Single Harvest Tawny Port

Distillery: Graham’s Port

Country Hierarchy: Douro, Portugal

Alcohol Content: 20.0%

Style: Tawny Port

So much going on on the nose here: cooked strawberries, citrus peel, tobacco and furniture polish. Lovely freshness on the palate with walnuts and toffee. Very very long.

A single harvest Port, or colheita as they are also known, is a tawny Port from a specific year. This means that it has spent its life ageing in a barrel, unlike vintage Ports which are aged in bottle. In the cask, the wine loses colour and is exposed to oxygen where it develops intense flavours of nuts, dried fruits and spices – not dissimilar to an old Cognac or Speyside single malt. There’s no need to decant. Just lightly chill and serve with hard cheeses or just on its own as a decadent nightcap.
